Clean and Green
Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area operates under special permit from the US Forest Service. We are committed to protecting the beautiful alpine environment and preserving this natural asset for future generations. Our managers, staff and board of directors seek opportunities to be good stewards of the mountain in a fiscally responsible manner that benefits our guests as well as the community we serve. Highlights of our efforts include:
Energy Conservation
- 7km of the nordic trail system is solar-lighted, providing 675 watts total installed power capacity and producing free power that does not result in toxic emissions and greenhouse gases. This project was
privately funded through grants and foundations, spearheaded by the Bogus Basin Nordic Group. Details here >>
- 80% of all lighting in the lodges uses energy-saving florescent
- Bogus Basin has chosen to offset its electricity usage associated with
the lights for night skiing with power generated by resources that are
certified as green, purchasing approximately 175,000 kilowatt-hours of green energy through Idaho Power. This is the equivalent of
planting almost 35 acres of trees or removing the emissions from 20
cars from our air.
Air Quality
- Valley wide bus transportation is scheduled and provided on weekends and holidays, serving an average of 750 skiers and riders each day
- RideShare Connect partnership with ACHD
- FREE park and ride lot available encourages carpooling
- No-idling zone for buses and cars on the mountain reduces emissions
- No smoking allowed in lodges or lift lines
- Purchase of four-stroke machinery to reduce air pollutants on the mountain (lift maintenance crews, Ski Patrol snowmobiles)
Water Quality
- Installation of waterless urinals in the mens' rooms conserve more than 400,000 gallons of potable water a year
- All waste water is recycled, treated and then reapplied to the ground in a land application program during the summer months
Waste Management
Natural Environment
- Bogus Basin mountain managers work closely with the Forest Service to develop and implement sounds methods for grading trails and slopes to minimize erosion and preserve native vegetation
Education and Information
- SnowSchool is a program originally created by Winter Wildlands Alliance (WWA) to introduce school children to snowshoeing, encourage healthy lifestyles, and foster a lifelong appreciation for the winter environment. Bogus Basin currently provides SnowSchool programs to 3rd-12th graders through our Nordic Education Center. Details here>>
- Snowshoe with a Ranger, Hike with a Ranger and Ski with a Ranger free programs are offered year round at Bogus Basin. Check our event calendar.
