Ability Chart

This is the chart used by Bogus Basin alpine ski and snowboard instructors to determine your ability level. You can use the alpine trail map to select appropriate terrain based on your ability level at Bogus Basin.

ALPINE

Level 1
You have never skied
You will learn to walk, climb, turn and stop
Level 2-Terrain: Coach
You are a little uncomfortable with turning, but can stop or go slow in a wedge on green terrain.
You will learn to build confidence and improve control with linked round wedges and turns to stop.
Level 3-Terrain: Cut-off, Sunshine
You can control your speed on green terrain, but still have trouble on steeper runs.
You will learn to reduce the wedge size and round the turns to control speed on green and easy blue runs.
Level 4-Terrain: Silver Queen, Showcase
You are comfortable making round, controlled wedge turns on all green terrain and easy blue terrain.
You will learn to match your skis toward the end of the turn on all green and easy blue runs.
Level 5-Terrain: Alpine, Upper Nugget
You are able to make round, controlled turns on all easy blue terrain.
You will learn to ski in changing terrain and variable snow conditions on all blue and some easier black runs.
Level 6-Terrain: Most Terrain
You are comfortable matching your skis earlier in the turn on blue terrain in variable conditions.
You will learn to make parallel turns on all blue runs, groomed or ungroomed.
Level 7-Terrain: All Terrain
You can link parallel turns but have trouble in bigger bumps and crud.
You will learn to ski a wide variety of terrain and conditions, including all single black diamond runs.
Level 8-Terrain: All Terrain
You are comfortable skiing most of the mountain.
You will learn how to make dynamic carved parallel turns and how to improve your balance in deeper snow and steeper moguls.
Level 9-Terrain: All Terrain
You will learn to improve your dynamic skiing in all terrain and all conditions.

SNOWBOARD

Level 1
You have never snowboarded before.
You will learn to balance, climb, skate, glide and turn to a stop.
Level 2-Terrain: Coach
You are able to make a toe and/or heel turn to a stop on beginner terrain.
You will learn to link turns on green terrain.
Level 3-Terrain: Morning Star, Showcase
You are able to link turns in control and stop.
Level 4-Terrain: Silver Queen, Showcase, War Eagle
You are able to control speed by linking turns on blue terrain.
You will learn to ride in variable snow conditions and terrain and may also learn how to carve and jump.
Level 5-Terrain: Most Terrain
You are comfortable riding most of the mountain in most conditions.
You will learn to become more proficient at jumping, carving and moguls.
Level 6-Terrain: All Terrain
We will coach you to develop a wide array of skills you can apply to the entire mountain.
